If you’re shopping for a new system this year, you’ve probably had a contractor bring up heat pumps even if you only asked about your AC. Here’s the honest breakdown.
What’s actually different.
A traditional setup uses two separate systems — an AC for cooling, a furnace for heat. A heat pump does both with one unit. It’s the same refrigeration cycle as your AC, just able to run in reverse: in summer it pulls heat out of your house, in winter it pulls heat in from outside air. Same outdoor unit, same ductwork, same cooling performance — a 16 SEER2 heat pump cools exactly as well as a 16 SEER2 AC.
Where it makes sense in North Texas.
Our winters are mild enough that a heat pump can carry most of the heating load efficiently. Homes here rarely see the kind of extended sub-25°F stretches that push heat pumps into their weak spot.
Where it’s a closer call.
If your furnace still has years of life left and only your AC died, replacing just the AC is usually the simpler, cheaper move — a heat pump only pays off when you’re replacing both anyway. And if you already have natural gas and want the best of both, a dual-fuel (hybrid) setup — heat pump for most of the year, gas furnace kicking in on the coldest nights — is worth asking about.
On cost.
Heat pump installation typically runs a bit higher upfront than an AC alone, but often less than buying a separate AC and furnace. Note: the federal 25C tax credit for heat pumps expired December 31, 2025, so it’s no longer available for 2026 installs but utility rebates through Oncor and others are still worth checking before you buy.
